ALEX® Water Testing
- SpaGuard pioneered the idea of computerized spa water analysis and we have continued to research and refine the process. Today, ALEX, our computerized water analysis system, provides accurate results in an instant. All you have to do is bring in a water sample from your pool or spa to your local SpaGuard Dealer and you’ll receive personalized step-by-step instructions for start-up, closing and maintenance. It’s that easy!

How is SpaGuard’s ALEX water testing different?
- Here accuracy counts and we have it! Our test is fast and much more accurate than a simple dip of a test strip at spasideor a self-driven analysis using a computer or mobile application. That’s because we test for several parameters beyond the basics to understand how they may be influencing each other in order to avoid trial and error. Being right the first time saves you time and money.

On top of that, our local water care experts have been trained and certified. They will walk you through the results and are happy to explain anything you might have questions about. Our ALEX recommendations will be sound based upon the way you care for your spa and the accumulated knowledge of all your previous water tests.

Our goal is that you will not only be satisfied with the performance results, but that you gain confidence in the products and advice you receive.

Why should I test my water?
- Fewer gallons of water means changes in water balance happen more quickly in a spa than a pool. Regular water testing will help keep a spa clear, clean, and well balanced. Balanced water allows chemicals to work effectively to kill bacteria as well as protect spa surfaces and equipment from metals and scaling. By testing your water with our ALEX water analysis at your local SpaGuard dealer, you can rest assured that your water will be properly diagnosed and given a correct treatment regimen.

How often should I get my water tested?
- Test your water frequently and adjust the balance and sanitizer levels as needed. How often depends on how often you use your spa, but it is recommended that you test the spa before each use and have your SpaGuard professional test a sample every month during your seasons of highest use.

Spa Maintenance Keys and Tips
Here are a few unique factors you should know about spas and what basic tasks will give you better-looking water and fewer problems.

- Circulation
The force and velocity of aerated water keeps water moving so the filter can remove suspended debris. Circulation also ensures that the chemicals are thoroughly distributed. Dead spots are usually not as prevalent in a spa as they are in a pool.
- Filtration
With the dirt, sweat and oils released in a spa, good filtration is essential. Cartridge filters are the typical choice and because of the increase in the amount of filterable debris, the filter should be regularly cleaned with a garden hose or chemically cleaned at refill.
- Cleaning
Cleaning a spa involves several aspects of care, including the removal of obvious debris by skimming or vacuuming, and removal of body oils that are rinsed off bathers. Also, be sure to wipe surfaces after heavy use.
- Chemical Treatments
Bacteria and algae grow much faster in a spa than in a pool. As a result, spa owners need to follow a regular and complete chemical treatment routine. Spa chemistry includes water balance, sanitizer and oxidizer applications.
- Testing
Fewer gallons of water mean changes in water balance happen faster. Add to this the aerated water, increased water temperature, and the heavier bather loads, and it’s easy to see the importance of regular testing. Adjust the balance and sanitizer levels as needed.
- Drain & Refill
Sooner or later, the water reaches a point where it just gets “worn out” from the bather load. When the water looks bad, smells bad, and feels bad it’s time for a change. It is recommended that you drain and refill your spa with fresh water approximately every 3 months.
- Rinse & Repeat
It’s always a good idea to rinse off before use to remove lotions and soaps in order to reduce the number of contaminants that could potentially cause poor water conditions. When done soaking, rinse off again to ensure that nothing lingers to potentially irritate your skin or eyes.
- Covers
Keep spa covered when not in use to prevent debris from getting in the water. After extended covered time, allow the spa to “breathe” a bit before getting in so that the trapped vapors and condensation can dissipate.

Anti Foam
- Quickly eliminates any surface foam caused by undesirable compounds and detergents
- For use with all sanitizer types
- For use in all spas and hot tubs

Balance your water to prevent problems
Keeping the right balance of your spa water is necessary. Balancers control scale, adjust pH and total alkalinity and correct mineral imbalances.

How important is pH really?
Having the correct pH level in your spa is crucial to your soakers’ comfort and also protects your equipment from corrosion and scale. The ideal pH is 7.2-7.6. If the pH is too high or too low it can cause those pesky red, itchy eyes!

Restore sparkle to your spa water
The SpaGuard line of cleaners and clarifiers improves the water’s appearance, extends filter performance, and protects spa surfaces. Water enhancers not only get rid of cloudy water and make it brilliantly clear but also help your filter work more efficiently.

Why take the additional step of an enhancer?
Having beautiful, sparkling clean and safe water allows you to enjoy spending time in your spa. Enhancers bring out the beauty in your water and keep your filter working at maximum efficiency so you have more time soaking and less time outside of your spa.

Spa Safety
Spa water maintenance products safeguard the health of your entire family, if used correctly. As a chemical provider we want to make sure everyone stays safe around our products. Keep the following do's and don'ts in mind for a safer more enjoyable spa experience.

Make sure to:
- Clean up spills as soon as they occur and safely dispose of the material.
- Store chemical products safely and out of the reach of small children.
- Keep your spa maintenance products in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from other household or garden chemicals and petroleum products.
- Brace liquids so they won’t tip while transporting them in your car.
- Don’t allow chemicals to stay in the car for a long period of time.
- Make the spa store your last stop.  Unpack them as soon as you get home.
- Use care when broadcasting powdered products into the spa on windy days to prevent product from getting in eyes or mouth or onto skin.
- Dispose of all chemicals according to label directions.
- Turn your face to one side or point the container away from you when opening product.

Please you should never:
- Never add water to chemicals. Always add the chemical to large amounts of water.
- Never use a vacuum cleaner to clean spills.
- Never throw chemicals in the trash or put spilled material back into the original container.
- Never store liquids directly above sanitizers and oxidizers as they may leak and contaminate other products.

- Never store sanitizers and oxidizers near metal products, such as bicycles, lawn mowers or cars because they may cause rust.
- Never mix chemicals of any kind together. An uncontrolled reaction such as fuming, fire or explosion could occur.
- Never mix two chlorine products from different containers together regardless of their similarities. All chlorine is not the same.
- Never overdose your spa. Be sure to use the exact amount specified on the label or by your SpaGuard® Dealer. Knowing your spa’s exact volume will help prevent over- or under-application.
- Never interchange measuring scoops or place wet scoops back into any chemical container.

Killing bacteria is key to spa maintenance
In a spa, sanitizers are added to control the growth of bacteria and algae. The warm water environment of the spa is conducive to growth, making sanitization essential to having a clean spa that is suitable for bathers. Although the chemical reactions that occur to sanitize a spa are the same as in a pool, the reactions in a spa happen at a much faster rate. Chemicals become more reactive and tend to be used up more quickly than in a pool, requiring frequent chemical additions to maintain proper sanitizer residuals.

Spa Shock to Remove Contaminants
Destroying organic contaminants from the environment and bathers is important

When people use spas, they leave undesirable compounds like body oils, perspiration and cosmetics that can irritate skin, burn eyes and create odors. Oxidizing, also known as shocking the water, removes these compounds and restores water clarity and comfort.

Isn’t shocking just for when your water has a problem?  No! Shocking should be part of your regular spa maintenance. While it does help with troubleshooting, routine treatment helps provide the correct chemical balance your spa water needs to keep the water clear, odor-free and comfortable. Shocking should be done weekly in most spas and more frequently for heavily used or commercial spas.

Spa Sentry®*
- Introduces a buffering compound, making pH easier to keep in balance
- One easy step
- Controls pH for up to two full months
- *Spa Sentry® should not be used in spas with plaster finishes or grouting that contains calcium or spas using Soft Soak®.
